Classroom Math Coaching and Mentoring
Kokopelli Educational Consulting provides Classroom Math Coachingand Mentoring utilizing the following techniques/strategies:
- Modeling the role of teacher questioning in problem solving
- Modeling use of manipulatives (connecting cubes, Base 10 blocks, etc.) and other hands-on materials
- Developing rubrics with students for the class to use in scoring open-ended problems
- Listening to and paraphrasing what teachers say. Asking questions appropriate to strengthen positive states of mind
- Demonstrating and identifying important math content so that teachers can improve their own understanding of math content
- Modeling games which provide for practice with basic skills and standard algorithms
- Teaching and supporting mental math strategies
- Modeling listening to children and determining what questions they are answering, what misconceptions they have, what strengths they have
- Pre/post lesson conversations when coaches model
- Planning/reflecting conversations with teachers when coaches script teachers’ lessons
- Sharing with teachers mathematics education articles to read and discuss, while modeling strategies and activities from the textbook or other resource books
